Final Fantasy XIII & the world’s most annoying character

Okay. I’m in Chapter Seven of this game, and I really wish I could jump in the television and whack the crap out of this character named “Hope”. He’s a little dipshit, who carries on all the time because Snow, another character, wasn’t able to save his mother. All he does is bitch and bitch and bitch and then when Snow comes along he’s too afraid to say anything so he just clams up. It gets to the point where you don’t want to even play the little son of a bitch in combat, because it’s more fun watching him die a painful death.

I HATE THIS KID! Okay, Vanille is pretty annoying, too, but she’s a fun little token sex-object who sounds like she’s doing the nasty during every battle. I can deal with that. I cannot deal with Hope. I want to throttle the little bastard.

You insured Kenny, you bastards!

Right. As of right now, it looks like they have the votes to path health care “reform”.

Despite the fact that poll after poll shows people are overwhelmingly against it.

I hope you’re all waking up to the fact that Barack Obama is not a pragmatic centrist like Bill Clinton, but an arrogant ideologue like…Jimmy Carter.

You fools who elected him deserve every bit of this. And every bit of the consequences that will come about because of this in November. If Scott Brown’s election wasn’t enough to make the people’s collective voice heard, what will be?

Review: God of War III for the PS3

Ah, time for another Playstation 3 exclusive: God of War III.

I haven’t played the first two installments of God of War, but I don’t think I’m missing much. The story is fairly simple. Kratos, our hero, is pissed off at the Gods and aims to take them down, along with all of Mount Olympus.

The game throws you into action right away. You’re hacking, you’re slashing, you’re using your magic, you’re even fighting a boss within the first three minutes.

Gameplay is fairly simple. Kratos has light attacks, heavy attacks, and magic attacks. He collects red orbs from enemies and chests (experience), blue orbs (magic power), and green orbs (health). Occasionally you’re going to get a special item that will have its own meter, which will deplete as you use the item and go up over time as it recharges.

Visually, the game is pretty damn intense. It taxes the PS3’s engine (you can tell by the labored actions of the system), which is saying something. But it all goes down smoothly.

God of War III is reminiscent of Devil May Cry in its use of orbs, its hack-and-slash gameplay, and its presentation of fairly straightforward but challenging little puzzles to get from one area to the next.

One downside of this game is that the “Save Altars” are a little bit too far spaced apart given how hard the game is. Other than that, the only other downside is the repetition — hacking away at enemies gets a tad boring after your third hour of doing it. But enough bosses are mixed in so that you have to think over strategy to make the game worthwhile.

I know a lot of people are huge fans of this game, but I’m only giving it an 8.5 out of 10.

Review: Star Trek Online for the PC

Well, about a month or two ago I participated in the Star Trek Online open beta, and when it ended, I liked the game so much I decided to sign up and play it.

If you’re a Star Trek fan, this game is for you. Star Trek Online takes place after the events of the latest movie (not back in time, but in the future, after Romulus has been destroyed). The Federation is back at war with the Klingons, and, as you find out during the progress of the game, Species 8472 (the “Undine”) are also busily trying to wreak havoc on the good old’ Federation.

Star Trek Online is an MMORPG — a “massive multiplayer online role-playing game”. Like any role-playing game, you progress through levels. There are ranks and sub-ranks, so you can be a “Lieutenant Commander 6” (which I currently am).

One of the great beauties of STO is that it merges ground “away” missions with space-based combat. On the away missions, you’ll find yourself confronted by hordes of enemies, and you, along with your bridge officers, will have to dispatch them and take care of your various missions. The scenery is quite pretty, although not as beautiful as, say, Lord of the Rings Online.

Space-baced combat, though is where STO really shines. You can choose (once you get past your “starter” ship) either an Escort, Cruiser, or Science Vessel. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Cruisers are the classic “Enterprise”-style ships, and you probably won’t feel complete without at least once piloting a Constitution-class Cruiser (the original Enterprise design).

In space, you steer your vessel with your keyboard, or — and this is much easier — by holding both mouse buttons down and moving the mouse in the direction you want to go. You have fore weapons, you have aft weapons, you have phasers, you have disruptors, you have torpedoes, you have mines — you have a bevy of weapons at your disposal, is what I’m trying to say.

Space, the final frontier…(click to enlarge)

And the space combat is intensely beautiful. Phasers shoot out like glittering beams, ships curve away leaving trippy trails of light behind them; damage shows on your ship as your hull is relentlessly assaulted by those damned Klingons and Romulans and…BORG! (the tutorial, God bless it, features the Borg).

Another great thing about the space combat is how smooth it is. I’ve seen fleet battles with fifty ships or more attacking another fifty ships and the system doesn’t even hiccup (admittedly, I am running a very powerful computer, though). It does, however, at times, get a little repetitive, but all MMOs have that problem.

One fun aspect of the game is recruiting your own team of Bridge Officers, each with their own unique land and space-based skill sets. You’ll use different Bridge Officers for different things, and it adds a lot of flexibility and depth to the game. Plus, it’s just fun to have your own “team” to boss around, even if you play solo.

Money is handled in “energy credits”, although you won’t find a heck of a lot of use for it. They’ve done a good job keeping the importance of money down, which, as any good Star Trek fan knows, fits with the Star Trek ethos: money has been eliminated in the future.

Crafting takes place at Memory Alpha, and it’s one of the areas where the game could use a little work. You go around scanning anomalies in space and on the ground to collect mineral samples, data samples, and such, and you turn them in at Memory Alpha for upgraded weapons and items. It takes a lot of crafting work to move beyond the initial limited selection of items.

There are exploration missions which reward you with upgraded weapons, good old patrol missions, and special missions handed out by a cavalcade of different characters, many of whom you’ll recognize from the Star Trek universe, or who are related to someone in that universe.

Besides crafting, one other area where the game suffers some problems is in the social networking area. Chat is muddled, the chat window is too small; chat is confusing, hard to understand, and hard to be heard on. Of course, they’ll probably patch that up eventually, but right now it needs some work.

You can form your own “Fleet”, another name for Guild/Clan on other MMOs. I belong to StarFleetGuild (shameless plug here), and my main character’s name is T’Kyp, although you can reach me at any of the “@Kipstah” addresses. Which reminds me, you can play Federation or Klingon, and even a freed Borg, although playing a freed Borg requires a lifetime subscription (around $250 or so). You can also select from a variety of different races, Vulcan and Human being the most common.

Pricing is pretty standard: about $15 a month, with small breaks given the longer length a package you buy.

More information can be found at: http://www.startrekonline.com.

I’m giving this game an 8.75 out of 10. There’s room for some improvement, and it needs some missions added, as well. But that can be taken care of with patches and expansions packs.

Live long and prosper!

Dirk Greineder takes executive post in “murderer’s club”

This story makes my stomach turn.

Dirk Greineder, who killed his wife May, is apparently in some sort of weird social club for life-convicted murderers.

A brief excerpt of the beginning of the linked article:

Convicted wife-killer Dirk Greineder has been named an officer of the only social club for murderers recognized by the commonwealth – even as he presses the state’s highest court to grant him a new trial.

Now, I actually knew the Greineder family. Colin was my class valedictorian, I had a terrible crush on the middle sister Britt, and I once made snow-cones with real snow with May Greineder, whose head Doctor Dirk bashed in before he slit her throat.

Last I saw, the kids were still asserting their father’s innocence. Guys, if you happen to read this, please accept reality. Your father is a murderer. Just accept it and try to move on with your lives. You deserve better than to be fighting for this asshole’s release. It doesn’t mean you can’t love him; of course you’ll still love him on some level, he’s your father. But what about your mother? She deserves love as well, and to love her, you’ve got to accept that your dad killed her. I’m sorry. It’s terrible. I don’t know what I’d do if I were you guys. But I so desperately want you to be able to accept the fact and start dealing with it…

Ah, hell, I don’t know. The whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach.

Doctor Who information for American viewers

It greatly pissed me off when Doctor Who decided to take a “year off”, but it’s back again, and in fact has been back in the UK for a little bit now (at least, in the form of specials).

However, none of the new Doctor Whos have been aired in the US yet, as far as I know. Correct me if I’m wrong. SyFy  (what  a stupid name change) doesn’t have it, and as far as I know, BBC America hasn’t been showing it.

There are three (four, if you count two-parters separately) new episodes with the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. They are:

The Planet of the Dead (Easter Special, 2009): The Doctor must save a bus full of innocents transported to a desert planet (with the aid of a cute young cat burglar).
The Waters of Mars (2009): The Doctor zips in to visit the first colonists of Mars — who all, according to history, mysteriously disappear the day he arrives.
The End of Time (Christmas Special, 2009, two parts, Tenth Doctor Finale): The Doctor faces down The Master and deals with a horde of Timelords (led by Timothy Dalton) from Gallifrey trying to escape the vapor-locked “Time War” (David Tennant’s last appearance as The Doctor).

The next season starts up on the BBC this Easter, 2010, with the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, and his new companion, Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan), in an episode entitled The Eleventh Hour.

How did I get to see the last Tenth Doctor specials? Simple. Torrents. Get ’em while they’re fresh. They’re out there. And I know some of you people are going to be pissed that I download torrents, but I don’t care. Bahaha!
