Fix for PLEX “Unauthorized Server” Problem on Roku

Okay, so I just got a Roku Streaming Stick for my dad, and I wanted to set it up so it could use PLEX, which is what I use to stream everything from my PC.

I was going nuts, because it kept telling me it couldn’t log into the server, because the server was “unauthorized”, even though I let it accept non-secure connections.

The fix, courtesy of gsparx on Reddit, is the following (the following example is if you want to get it to play on devices connected to your home network):

In the PLEX app on your computer, go to Settings -> Server -> Network. There will be a box that says “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without authorization”. Enter 192.168.1.0/24 into that box. You may need to refresh, but your Roku should now be able to access your server. You may have to enter a different IP depending on your configuration, but that one worked for me, since, again, I’m using it on my home network.

I hope this helps some people. It was driving me nuts.

No problem, man! It’s a frustrating error to run into. Good luck with your Roku TV — I just have the stick but I love it.

If I have a kid, I’m naming him after you. I wish the buttheads at plex would put this on there website. THANK YOU so much.

Your advice worked for me too. Sorry, my daughter is all grown up now and has a different name that yours. LOL.

Thanks for figuring this out and posting. I ran into this years ago and gave up looking for a solution. All along it was that missing IP address range. Now I can actually switch between servers within the same official Plex Roku app. No more switching between the official Plex and Plex RARflix!

I’ve been using Plex & Roku since the beginning of both. Never had this problem until today. Your solution fixed it right up, thanks!

March 2023 and the solution still works!

I haven’t had any issues with Plex in a while and for some reason it was working on my PC, but Roku said unauthorized and yes this works still!!! Amazing Thank you.

After restarting my computer, then trying to shut it down completely and restarting my computer my Roku TV would still not connect to my Plex server.

So here is another solution you may try, that worked for me. This will reset your network connection for your Roku TV (this will erase your wifi username and password you entered and you will have to re-enter that info after doing the following). On your Roku TV go to Settings>System>Advanced System Settings>Network Connection Reset (the TV will now do what appears to be a soft reboot and clear your network settings)

Now you need to re-enter your wireless or wired username and password on your Roku TV by going to Settings>Network>Setup Connection>choose wired or wireless>then in the next screen enter your username and password. Hopefully, that will help you reconnect your plex. Best
