Civilization: Beyond Earth Fullscreen 1920×1080 (1080p) not working

Well, I was waiting with bated breath for the new Civilization: Beyond Earth; I downloaded it at midnight, and I can’t play it (except in Windowed mode, which is distracting as all hell and which I will not do on principle) in the standard 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution (“1080p”, but us computer geeks know it better as the simple 1920×1080 standard resolution). Apparently, during all their testing over at 2k and Firaxis and whatever, no one ever bothered to try to run the game at that resolution on a 144 hz monitor. You got it, that’s the issue (144 hz), according to this link:

http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/203809446-Problem-Running-Civilization-Beyond-Earth-in-Full-Screen

I love the Civ games but this is really beyond the pale in terms of a pathetic glitch that got through. 144 hz machines are standard for a lot of gamers, including myself (I was just zipping around the net and noted two people looking forward to playing Civ: BE at 144 hz, before the launch tonight), and now we can’t run the game in the standard computing resolution almost everyone uses — without running it in Windowed mode. Until we get a patch. In my humble opinion, the patch should have been out about an hour or two after release. *grumble*

You can follow the issue on Twitter over here.

There’s also a thread on reddit about it over here.

    It’s a joke. Game rated excellent for Nvidia 3D vision which requires 120hz yet game won’t run full screen at 1080p. Civ 5 never missed a beat!

    Any sign of a psych or further comms? Nope! Annoyed. I preorder most firaxis games but not anymore.

      Sorry I took so long to approve your comment. 🙂 Yeah, I know what you mean. Playing in Windowed mode also takes you hugely out of immersion, too. I think I’ve played one full game of BE. And it’s, what, 3 weeks later and they STILL don’t have a patch out for it? Ridiculous. What was QA doing? Making sure things look fuzzy when you’re not centered on the action? WTF?

    :: Go to your steam library
    :: Right-click the game
    :: Click “Properties”
    :: Click “Set Launch Options”
    :: Type “-refresh 60”
    :: Click “OK”

    This is a fairly common problem with steam games. At least, it’s common enough that I’ve had to use this fix 3 or 4 other times to get fullscreen.

    It’s Civilization. I understand the allure of 144Hz refresh, I do, but… it’s a turn-based strategy game. 60 will do just fine.

      This was all tried before the update. None of it worked. Changing my monitor to a 60 Hz refresh rate, in Steam *and* in system settings, did nothing. If you have a 144 Hz monitor, you cannot play fullscreen — until the patch came out, now you can. It was an admitted issue; I showed you the links. Changing the refresh rate did not do anything to get it out of Windowed mode.
