Michelle Obama’s misstep…

Right, for those of you not addicted to the 24-hour news cycle — Michelle Obama got quoted saying that, due to her husband’s success, this is the “first time” she has ever been proud of her country.

Oh, man, was that stupid.

Here’s all she had to do — change the wording of the phrase to:

“This is the proudest I’ve ever been of my country.”

Or anything along those lines.

The 24-hour news cycle will guarantee this story goes away, but what the hell, might as well blog while the blogging’s still good.

Hmmm… That’s weird, a black woman saying that she’s displeased with the way her Country has handled things in the past. I would expect her to be overjoyed with the discrimination, poverty, sexism and general disrespect her race is afforded in America. Not to mention the death threats and idiotic antics she will likely be exposed to by the racists in this country if her husband actually wins the primary. Maybe she should be proud that we are fighting a war that no one, including the soldiers involved in the war believe that we can win.

It’s a terrible shame you’ve apparently never learned to read. First, poll after poll has shown the soldiers in Iraq want to win it, and believe it’s winnable. And why do you think the Dems want to disallow soldiers voting? (see Al Gore, 2000, if you’ve learned to read by now) Because the soldiers vote overhwhelmingly REPUBLICAN.

It’s a terrible country for blacks, I know. Oprah Winfrey is so dirt poor with no influence. Halle Berry can’t win a best actress award — oh wait, she did. Eddie Murphy…Spike Lee…they’re starving here! They should move to Uganda, where life is civilized, don’t you think?

You’re hilarious. You forgot to mention pro athletes. Awesome. Tell me about a handful of celebrities and say blacks are doing great in this country. Hooray! Racism is finally a thing of the past because Oprah, Eddie Murphy and Shaq are making money. Dr. King would be so proud.

Thanks for your insightful reply to my comment. I agree, what are the blacks so angry about anyway? White people have been so agreeable in their efforts to end racism and it has finally paid off.

As for the war, you’re right on that too. We should keep sending soldiers off to die in the middle east.

I’m going to go listen to hooked on phonics now.

Also two black Secretaries of State under Bush. But that doesn’t count for anything, I know. You liberals are so wary of facts, because it’s so distressing that they never seem to match up to what you *think* is reality.

Rational reasoning doesn’t work with liberals. It’s all about emotion, feeding the class warfare machine…ah well.

We’re a terrible country. You should leave immediately for Uganda. It’s much more fair in Africa; at least there you have a good chance of getting slaughtered for something “worthwile” — blood diamonds.

We’re also talking about a country that is about to nominate a black man as a presidential candidate in the general election — who has a very strong chance of winning.

But I guess this is all beyond you, because you FEEL the white suburban guilt, so it must be true. I know liberals are very much in touch with their “feelings”. Not so much with their “brain”…

Oprah Winfrey is possibly the most powerful woman in show business, yet, of course, I can’t use her as an example, because you *feel* she’s just a freak coincidence.

Ah, well, if Obama or Hillary win, you might have a chance to use your socialized healthcare system to patch up your bleeding heart — that is, if you don’t mind turning health care into a sort of perverse DMV.

Good luck with all that. :-)

Would you like me to post links to how soldiers are voting, the links to the polls showing they overhwelmingly support the war, the ones showing they overwhelmingly believe the war can be won? Or would you rather just continue to nurse your grudge against America since it “feels” right?

Oh, awful awful America. The world would be so much better without us, I know. It would collapse into complete anarchy. Then everyone would truly be equal, because they’d ALL be poor and starving. ;-)

Who loves ya, baby? Who loves ya? C’mere, let me give you a hug. It’s going to be okay. After all, the Freemasons control everything, right? ;-) No, wait, sorry, I guess that’s the Zionist conspiracy.

    No, wait, wait, it’s Bigfoot’s fault…

I think you need to spread your message. Start your own blog, man, and name it “The Sky is Falling!”, because we’re obviously all doomed. :-)

It’s okay. I’ll still give you that hug. I know you’re a sensitive man or woman of the new millenium. I know how hard it is when the facts don’t support your opinions. It’s tough. I’m so sorry.

Oh, and I forgot…you really don’t read. I never claimed racism was dead in this country. Read the blog. You’ll find a line reading that there can be no open honest debate on race until we admit racism exists, and that it will exist beyond our lifetime. All we can do is our best to move forward towards the ideal that all men truly are created equal.

Seriously, this time, I’m not joking. You never read that post. What do you read? Books by Michael Moore and Al Franken? ;-)

    Hey Kip,

I just saw this thread and find it interesting that you can mention that racism is alive and well in America but in the same breath, you give a bunch of reasons why black people should stop complaining about the unequal distribution of power in America and how this country is great for blacks.

The original post seemed to indicate that the author was not surprised at Michelle’s comment due to the historic mistreatment of blacks in this country. Your post then goes on to talk about how blacks are doing well in this country as compared to in parts of Africa. You seem to be disagreeing with the original poster as to how black people are treated in this country yet you then go on to talk about how racism is alive and well here.

Given the fact that you admit that racism is alive and well in this country, I am surprised that you do not agree that Michelle’s comments reflect what is a reality for many blacks (not named Oprah or Shaq or Eddie Murphy).

Basically, your comment about having an honest discussion about racism seems to have been lost here. It seems that you will acknowledge racism in some instances but not in others.

  7. Kip Lange says:

You’re getting this wrong. I am acknowledging that racism exists, but I am trying to point out that certain unnamed political figures who maintain that racism is “as bad as it was 40 years ago” are out of their *minds*.

Racism exists. Period. It exists. That doesn’t mean we haven’t made great strides, and it doesn’t mean that black people don’t have a legitimate right to air grievances about the racism remaining in this country. What am I trying to point out is how far forward we have come. In other words, why aren’t we giving some credit to ourselves for being a hell of a lot better about it?

White voters on the Dem side of the aisle are flocking to Obama. That’s something to be proud of. Jackie Robinson is something to be proud of. *This country* is something to be proud of.

Take France, for example, and the anti-Semitism rampant there. We don’t have near the problem they do with that, either with Jewish people or with blacks or yellows or greens or purples or plaids.

Do you see what I’m saying? It’s like a doctor treating a patient in remission from cancer and lauding him or her on the giant leaps forward they’ve taken by going through grueling therapy.

Racism exists but it’s infinitely better than it was 40 years ago. We’re poised to nominate a black man for president, one who has a damn good shot of winning — because he’s winning the white vote.

Now you tell me how that isn’t progress. And tell me how, before this, the success of, say, someone like Oprah Winfrey, is also *not* something to be proud of.

    Get it?
